Attested: (Official stamp returns) 41,000 (1843); 57,000 (1848); 123,000 (1854). Reported: 200,000 following repeal of newspaper stamp in 1855; 310,000 for issue on marriage of Prince of Wales in 1863 (The Illustrated London News, 13 May 1967, 42-3). Holiday issues in 1880s sometimes sold more than 500,000 (Deacon’s, 1886, 84).
