Abbreviations and Sources of Information
The following is a list of sources consulted for publication information. Bibliographic entries have been crosschecked in different reference guides for consistency. When possible entries have been traced and personally inspected. Some entries have proven impossible to locate. These have been indicated with a bracketed note of the reference source at the end of the entry. The abbreviations used in these notes correspond to those indicated below.
Bentley Papers: Publishing records, available on microfilm, have provided useful information on Taylor’s first two novels.
BL: British Library.
BP: Blackwood Papers. The publishing records of John Blackwood & Sons, stored in the National Library of Scotland, contain much useful bibliographic information on the three works Taylor published with them. Also useful are the company’s file of letters, which contain over one hundred letters written between the firm and Taylor.
E Cat: the English Catalogue of Books.
GNC: German National Catalogue of Books.
INS: Indian National Bibliography (1958-1975).
IO: The India Office. Several rare copies of Taylor’s works are stored here, along with important documents pertaining to Taylor’s civil and military career.
Kegan Paul: Refers to the publishing records of Kegan Paul, Trench & Trubner, available on microfilm.
LF: Le Librairie Française.
LL Cat: The Catalogue of the London Library.
NUC: The National Union Catalogue.
