NOVELS AND COLLECTIONS
(in chronological order)
Leicester: An Autobiography
1. London: George Redway, 1885. (Incorrectly described in publisher’s note to 8, 9 as having been published in 1884.) 2 vols in one. 333p. + 271p. Listed once only in English Catalogue of Books, where it appears as “2 vols. 8vo. 21s; red. 6s. May-June”, and once only in The Publishers’ Circular for June 1885, where it appears simply as “2 vols. in 1. Post 8vo. 6s,” According to a later reviewer, Leicester had been promptly banned by Mudie’s, Smith’s and the London Library: it won “a short and by no means sweet succes de scandale, and was straightway forgotten” (see 194 below). The Athenaeum’s advance-copy review in May 1885 described it as “a nightmare of a book,” adding that Adams would only affront readers and irritate critics with “so wanton a misuse of his powers” (see 162 below). The two volumes may well have been bound together and sold at the reduced price of 6s. at first publication (June 1885). The Mitchell Library copy has the 2 vols bound together. Revised and republished as 8, 9.
