John Murray (Publishers) Ltd advises that a book titled The Mills of God is listed in its archives, but was abandoned. There is no date. (Personal correspondence, 1993.) A disparaging comment by ‘Jacob Tonson’ (Arnold Bennett) in the New Age shortly after the novella was serialized may well have discouraged ER or a publisher. He commented that her ‘serious’ serialized fiction was ‘painful’ in book form.]

Cicely Hamilton adapted ‘Where Are You Going To …?’ for the stage in 1913-1914. ER and William Archer were unhappy with the adaptation and ER herself worked on it. The stage version was to be a Woman’s Theatre production. The play was refused a licence in August 1914. A licence was initially recommended, but the Lord Chamberlain was unhappy with the recommendation and referred the play to the Advisory Board. A licence was refused on the grounds that the second act was set in a brothel and that licensing the play would compromise the firm stand the Board had taken against the licensing of George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs Warren’s Profession.
Adapted as a film in 1919. See No. 290.
